Santiago Leon Invitation to Downtown Bay Forum Lunch/Debate on Health Care Reform

Downtown Bay Forum May 27: Leading physicians debate health care reform

Every elected official in Washington will tell you that he/she favors health care reform:
but what does that mean? One group favors replacing the current insurance-based
system with a tax-financed, privately-provided "enhanced Medicare for all." Others
oppose this and support a variety of more incremental steps. Our May 27 forum brings
together leading voices for these two approaches.

Speakers: Olveen Carrasquillo, M.D., MPH, UM Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Bernd Wollschlaeger, M.D., FAAFP, FASAM, President of the Dade County Medical Association.
See below for further information.

Moderator: Helen Ferre, Channel 2 talk show host.

Further information on our speakers:

1. Olveen Carrasquillo, MD, MPH, Vice President and Policy Director of Latinos for National Health Insurance.

Dr. Carrasquillo is a Puerto Rican-born physician who was raised in the Bronx. He was a co-founder of Latinos for National Health Insurance, an organization which advocates a single-payer universal health care system for the United States. You can read about the organization and its positions at Latinos For National Health Insurance.

Here is a quote from an account of a 2008 presentation by Dr. Carrasquilo:

(Dr. Olveen) Carrasquillo said research done in 2003 had shown that a national health care plan that awarded insurance to all residents, documented or not, would save between $200 billion and $250 billion, but feels that despite studies and statistics that there are those who would rather pay more in order to exclude the undocumented rather than save on an inclusive plan.

"I think the most glaring issue is that most of the leading politicians are not willing to take on this issue," Carrasquillo said. "It's obvious that there's widespread public support. Over half the U.S. population supports this, and yet they don't want to talk about it, simply put, because they don't have the backbones to stand up to the insurance and pharmaceutical industry."

Dr. Carrasquillo recently moved to Miami from New York City, where he served as Director of the Center for Health of Urban Minorities, to become the Chief of the Department of General Internal Medicine at the University of Miami Medical School. He serves on the Advisory Committee on Minority Health to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. He is principal investigator of several large federal grants relating to minority health and health disparities, has published in leading journals, and has served in leadership roles in various professional organizations.

2. Bernd Wollschlaeger, MD, FAAFP, FASAM, President of the Dade County Medical Association.

Dr. Wollschlaeger is a Delegate to the American Medical Association, which favors an insurance-based solution to our health insurance crisis.

Here is a quote from one of Dr. Wollschaeger's blog postings:

Universal healthcare may, or may not, be the best solution, but it is clear that too many Americans have been squeezed out of the insurance market -- and that must change.

Dr. Wollschlager is Board Certified, Family Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Family Medicine, University of Miami. He is a frequent contributor to Florida Docs Blog and DCMATalk.

Dr. Wollschlager, whose father was in the German military, moved to Israel and converted to Judaism. He is the subject of a 2007 Miami Herald article, which is reproduced here.
